Welcome to Windsor RFC Under 8's

We welcome all boys and girls aged under 8 interested in tag rugby (school year 3).

Come and join us at our training sessions held at 10am every Sunday morning from 6th September 2009 to May 2010 on the Home Park sports ground in Windsor.

How to find us - Directions & Pitch Layout

These training sessions comprise warm-ups, fitness activities, ball handling skills and match practice.  Children are allowed to attend 3 training sessions to see whether they enjoy tag rugby, before we expect them to join the club.  (

The U8 teams also have a number of fixtures throughout the season with other local clubs.  These are listed on the website along with other news just like it is for the seniors, juniors and other minis age groups, just click on the links above.

All our coaches are appropriately qualified with the RFU, and are fully CRB checked to ensure a consistently high quality of coaching that always places safety and enjoyment to the fore. Most of our coaches began by preferring to get involved , rather than simply watch from the sidelines, and we welcome and encourage parental involvement at all levels, be it as coaches, first-aiders, referees, or just vocal support!

Towards the end of the U8's season, the training sessions include an introduction to contact rugby, to prepare them for the new game rules that apply in the U9's.

We would also like to remind parents that mini rugby at Windsor is not a creche facility.  It is important a parent (or nominated adult advised to the coaching team) is present at all times in case of injury and to supervise behaviour of their child during training or in and around the clubhouse area.  The clubhouse is open every week and hot and cold refreshments are always available.

Rugby is also a very social sport and Windsor rugby is very active in this department.  During the season there are a number of tournaments, functions, tours, presentations and fun days that are open to everyone.  Our age group benefits from a very active parent support base that goes a long way to ensure good communications, well-run events and good camaraderie on the touch line.

More news and information can be found here by clicking on the appropriate links or by contacting Drew (Team Manager) or speaking to one of the coaches.

Squad Selection Policy and Criteria

We need to sub-divide our total squad of approximately 30 - 40 players for both training and matches. Whilst some skills training can be undertaken with the whole squad, we find that mixing abilities does not work for anyone – the less able players are unable to keep up with the more able and conversely the better players become frustrated with their team-mates. However, in order that players do not become unfairly pigeon-holed, the coaches will hold regular review sessions at which squads may be updated. Having too many changes to squads is disruptive and so we are currently planning three reviews during the 2009/10season.

This season we expect to run three squads. An “A” Squad of 10 will be selected with the remainder forming the “B/C” Squad. Within the “B/C” squad we will name 10 as the core “B” Squad to attend “B” fixtures and festivals. The squad members not named will be selected for the “C” fixtures bolstered by some “B” players. Please be assured that it is perfectly possible for players to move up and down through the entire squad. The selection criteria remain the same as ever: Attitude, Ability and Attendance.

Ability

Competition is inherent in rugby, and whilst we strive to ensure that all players are included, good performance will be recognised and rewarded where possible. Whilst turning in a good performance is the best way to catch the selector’s eye, ability alone does not guarantee a place. All players are encouraged to aspire to reach the top, whilst those already there must guard against resting on laurels. Mini rugby is all about player development, and we hope to help all players reach their full potential.

Attitude

Rugby is a game that requires courage, discipline and respect for others. We aim to reinforce and foster this in all players, emphasising and encouraging positive behaviour in all players. Ill-discipline, foul play or other breaches of the good player’s code will not be tolerated, and will be dealt with appropriately.

Attendance

A record of attendance is kept each week, as is a record of who is selected for competitive fixtures/tournaments. In this way, we aim to ensure that all players have an equal opportunity to play at an appropriate level. No player can expect to play in every game. Furthermore, just as no player can expect a place in the team just by turning up on the day, commitment will be rewarded with opportunity.

Hotline Number

I have set up a "Hotline Number" for use on the day of a training session or a Tournament. I will post an announcement on the voicemail system that you can call first thing on the day, I will advise if the session will be going ahead or not. It's not intended for any other use, please don't try to get hold of me using this number and neither should you leave a message. Drew (U8 Manager)
