Learning new skills, having fun and building on success
|
Welcome to the Windsor U15s 2009/10 season, our third season in youth rugby. With full-size pitches, 15 players and almost full Rugby laws, we are building on the consistent success of the last two season. Both 1st XV and 2nd XV teams have the potential to do very well. In the second half of the season, the Berkshire Youth Leagues will again dominate the horizon, this time for both teams. As ever, this is a tournament we feel our teams can win. Click here for details of the League.

 Head Coach Mark Hilleard |
2009/10 Objectives We aim to support players of all abilities, from the absolute novice to the experienced player, and to instill in them a love of this great game. We believe that winning sides usually have more fun, but winning is secondary to player and team development. We run two teams, the 1st XV and the 2nd XV. The 1st XV have been a very strong side for several seasons, and will contunue to be competitive this year – though we know that other teams are coming on strongly too – competition within the county is strong. The 2nd XV encompass those who are developing, either physically or in their understanding of the game, or who simply have a very strong competitor blocking the route to the 1st XV. They're a very useful side, but are a little short of players and need to fill some gaps - particularly in the forwards. We have (as always) set ourselves three key objectives: 1. An attacking defence 2. Creating and using space 3. Thinking on the field With that in mind Mark Hilleard and the team of coaches look forward to welcoming old and new players to the Windsor U15 2009/10 season – hopefully the best yet. We welcome new players and parents, so if you have friends who are interested in trying out rugby, or you're reading this website for the first time please come along and meet us.

What do we do? We train to play quality rugby, and we play that same quality rugby in our games. Sessions run from 09:30 to 12:00 on a Sunday. This season, we intend to play both 1st XV and 2nd XVs in consecutive games. Our fixture lists are already challenging for both teams ahead of Christmas, and after Christmas we have entered two teams into the the Berkshire A and B Leagues. This season is the first season of the Berkshire B League, and Windsor U15s along with many other Berks clubs are looking forward to playing in. As always we are working to improve the number and competitiveness of games organized for all players. Please note there is no regular midweek training in the short term, although coaches may squeeze in a voluntary ad hoc session if the situation demands it – particularly in the week before league matches.
|
What's the Coaching Set-up Like? We have five regular coaches and two irregulars dealing with a squad of around 35 players. All coaches are qualified to at least RFU Level 1, and all are regularly vetted by the CRB - a requirement these days.

 Game analysis on the Eurostar

Social We tour extensively. We defend our U.13 title during a tour of Lille in Northern France, where two years ago the boys and their minders developed a sense of unity and teamship. Winning the tournament set us up for a fantastic season that year, and we hope to do the same again in this current season. There will also be another in our series of regular Easter tours - further details will follow in due course. This group of parents takes time after the sessions to chew over the days events in the bar of whatever clubhouse we may be in. It's not unknown for us to be the last out! During this time, the players plumb reserves of energy to have yet more fun in a social environment.

Comments and Suggestions This website is run principally for club members, potential new joiners, and club members friends and family. And of course we welcome any interest in the wellbeing of our club by the general public. We hope it provides a good overview of the spirit and enthusiasm of the U15s community. If you have any comments and suggestions, or would like some further information, please email us by clicking here Contact Us If you are considering joining, would like to come and see us, or would like any further information, then please contact either Mark Hilleard (Head Coach) on 01628 675 720 or Francis Turner (Team Manager) on 01753 861 427. Alternatively, just check the Fixtures and come down and visit us at the end of a Sunday session when we’re at Home Park. We finish at 12, and can usually be found on the Second XV pitch, the middle of the three between the clubhouse and the swings at the entrance to Romney Lock Road. (Note: Players born on or after 01.09.94 are elegible to play U15 rugby. Always remember your gumshield)

Rugby Equipment A gum shield, appropriate footwear and clothing (consider the weather conditions) are essential. If you have regular screw-in stud football boots, the studs may have to be replaced with aluminium rugby studs - these together with many other rugby kit requirements can be met by the WRFC shop in the Clubhouse, which is open on Sunday mornings. Boots with rugby studs are acceptable for soccer. We strongly advise against the use of "blades". Though these are not banned in rugby, we accept the thinking of Sir Alex Ferguson, who bans Manchester United players from wearing them on safety grounds - it is thought they place excessive stress on the metatarsel. In rugby, there is also the issue that they can carve a player up in contact - please overcome pester power and keep the game safe. Safety Safety of all children participating in sport at WRFC is paramount for the club. All coaches, referees, first aiders and parents engaged in direct contact with the children are CRB checked and adhere to the club’s safety policies and procedures. In return we ask that a responsible adult is identified against each child, and that adult remains at the Windsor Club, (or the relevant away club when we are training and playing away), whilst the child is playing or training. The child must know their nominated responsible adult. [There is a hardy group of parents regularly watching the sessions. They may not mind helping out occasionally if asked - especially if a hot coffee is promised on cold mornings!]

Windsor beat Maidenhead - 39 points to 15
|
Windsor 39 - Maidenhead 15 Windsor U15s beat Maidenhead by 39 points to 15 in a tense top of the table clash on Sunday. Both teams are in with a chance of winning the league and the match lived up to expectations in terms of commitment and skill. The first half was very close with Windsor opening with a break-away try from their own try line started by Sam Jones and ended by Jonathan Malvoire (5-0). Windsor kept the pressure on and were rewarded with another try when Maidenhead failed to ground the ball over their try line. Jay Fieldmartin tenaciously tackled a Maidenhead player over his own try line, this dislodged the ball and Jonathan Malvoire dived on it to score. (10-0). Maidenhead responded with a try (10-5) and then all remained equal until just before half-time, when Sam Hilleard made a break from the fly half position to score under the posts for Sam Jones to convert. (17-5) Half time. Maidenhead scored an early try in the second half following a fumbled restart (17-10), but Windsor quickly responded with a penalty upon their next visit to the Maidenhead 22. (20 -10). Windsor then stepped up a gear, moving the ball well across the pitch to score two tries in quick succession. The first by Mark Wildridge and the second by Luke Jamieson who sliced his way through a number of tackles before stretching to score. Sam Jones converted one of the tries taking Windsor to a lead of 32 points to 10. Maidenhead managed to score one more try from a kick charged down, but Windsor closed the game out, with Blake Roberts running onto a clever box kick from Jack Turner down the wing. Blake gathered the ball and then ran half the pitch to score under the posts. Sam Hilleard duly converted and the final whistle blew a result of 39 points to Windsor and 15 points to Maidenhead. Windsor Man of the Match - Sam Hilleard The starting 15 were: Jonathan Malvoire, Mark Wildridge, Connor Cole, Tom Tickner, Dan Godlement, Barney Pope, Tom Moran, Tom Freeman, Jack Turner, Sam Hilleard, Sam Jones, Luke Jamieson, Blake Roberts, Jay Fieldmartin and Idzi Baumgart. A well deserved team win, with full support of replacements Edward Eadie, Harry Scrace, Owen Murray, Henry Kidman, Peter Mitchel, Alex Weyman and William Temple. Windsor enjoyed superb support from a packed touchline, taking them on to their final league encounter of the season at Home to Reading next Sunday. Please come and watch - KO 10:30.
