Learning New Skills, Having Fun and Building on Success

Welcome to the Windsor U13s 2007/8 season, our first season in youth rugby.  This is what the boys have been waiting for - full-size pitches, 15 players and almost full Rugby laws.  Both Lions and Tigers teams have the potential to do very well.

We are now into the second half of the season, with the Berkshire Youth Leagues dominating the horizon. This is a tournament we feel we can win.

Head Coach Mark Hilleard

2007/08 Objectives

We aim to support players of all abilities, from the absolute novice to the experienced player, and to instill in them a love of this great game.  We believe that winning sides usually have more fun, but winning is secondary to player and team development.  We run two teams, the Lions and the Tigers.  The Lions are extremely powerful this season, and are scoring tries for fun.  The Tigers encompass those who are developing, either physically or in their understanding of the game, or who simply have a very strong competitor blocking the route to the Lions.  They're a useful side too, but are a little short of players and need to fill some gaps - particularly in the forwards.

We
have (as always) set ourselves three key objectives:

1.  An attacking defence
2.  Creating and using space
3.  Thinking on the field

With that in mind Mark Hilleard and the team of coaches look forward to welcoming old and new players to the Windsor U13 2007/8 season – hopefully the best yet.  We welcome new players and parents, so if you have friends who are interested in trying out rugby, or you're reading this website for the first time please come along and meet us.

What do we do?

We train to play quality rugby, and we play quality rugby.  Sessions run from 09:30 to 12:00 on a Sunday.  We aim to play alternate Lions and Tigers fixtures, with the non-playing team travelling to the venue and training there, at the same time acting as subs for the playing team.  This is demanding of the parents, we know - but with the numbers we have, it is the only way to ensure that we can iron out the wrinkles between matches.  There are no midweek sessions, though coaches may squeeze in a voluntary ad hoc session if the situation demands it.

What's the Coaching Set-up Like?

We have five regular coaches and two irregulars dealing with a squad of around 35 players.  All coaches are qualified to at least RFU Level 1, and all are regularly vetted by the CRB - a requirement these days.

Game analysis on the Eurostar
Social

We tour extensively.  We kicked off this season with a tour of Lille in Northern France, where the boys and their minders developed a sense of unity and teamship.  Winning the tournament set us up for a fantastic season, and we will take our confidence and teamship across the Tamar over Easter to get a sense of how things are done in the Republic of Cornwall.

This group of parents takes time after the sessions to chew over the days events in the bar of whatever clubhouse we may be in.  It's not unknown for us to be the last out!  During this time, the players plumb reserves of energy to have yet more fun in a social environment.

Comments and Suggestions

This website is run principally for club members, potential new joiners, and club members friends and family.  And of course we welcome any interest in the wellbeing of our club by the general public.  We hope it provides a good overview of the spirit and enthusiasm of the U13s community.

Blades - who needs them?

Rugby Equipment

A gum shield, appropriate footwear and clothing (consider the weather conditions) are essential.   If you have regular screw-in stud football boots, the studs may have to be replaced with aluminium rugby studs - these together with many other rugby kit requirements can be met by the WRFC shop in the Clubhouse, which is open on Sunday mornings.  Boots with rugby studs are acceptable for soccer.

We strongly advise against the use of "blades".  Though these are not banned in rugby, we accept the thinking of Sir Alex Ferguson, who bans Manchester United players from wearing them on safety grounds - it is thought they place excessive stress on the metatarsel.  In rugby, there is also the issue that they can carve a player up in contact - please overcome pester power and keep the game safe.

Safety

Safety of all children participating in sport at WRFC  is paramount for the club. All coaches, referees, first aiders and parents engaged in direct contact with the children are CRB checked and adhere to the club’s safety policies and procedures.

In return we ask that a responsible adult is identified against each child, and that adult remains at the Windsor Club, (or the relevant away club when we are training and playing away), whilst the child is playing or training. The child must know their nominated responsible adult.  [There is a hardy group of parents regularly watching the sessions.  They may not mind helping out occasionally if asked - especially if a hot coffee is promised on cold mornings!]

Car Parking

Members of the rugby club displaying their Home Park Sports Club discs can use the car parks either side of the road at the Home Park on a Sunday up until 1:00 pm.  Anyone wishing to remain after 1:00pm should use the car parking beyond the cricket club i.e adjacent to the tennis courts and beyond.

Anyone found parked outside the marked bays, especially anywhere between the old house and the rugby club, will not be ticketed, they will be towed away! We are also expecting similar intolerance of anyone parked on the verges on Datchet Road.
