Welcome to Windsor Rugby JuniorsJunior rugby is designed to carry on developing young boys' enthusiasm for this king of sports throughout their teenage years. At Windsor we run up to six age groups from Under 13s to Colts and although many of the boys will have progressed up from our Minis section, we also welcome at any time, new players from other clubs or who are new to the area. Our season runs every Sunday morning (excluding Xmas/New Year and Easter) for eight months from September to April and comprises a mixture of ’friendly’ fixtures against other clubs; both local and from further afield. In addition, age groups U13 to U16 participate in the Berkshire League against seven or so clubs who compete for the title of Berkshire League champions. Another major event in our calendar is the Juniors Tournament, which, unlike many of these festivals, is held early in the season on the second Sunday of October. Last year some 32 teams involving over 640 players competed across four age groups. Interspersed between all these activities are of course those vital training sessions, run by our dedicated team of qualified (but unpaid!) coaches who help develop both individual and collective skills. As well as the players themselves, we are always pleased to see parents and friends supporting their team - whether it’s at Home Park or particularly when we travel away for fixtures - help with transport is always much appreciated!

Windsor U17s v Bicester Colts | OBB 10s Tournament 13th April 2008: Windsor Rugby hosted the OBB Colts 10s tournament and both Windsor teams got through to the Cup play-offs, the U17s narrowly losing to Bicester Colts 10-7 in the semifinals. However, Windsor U17s did get the scalp of Maidenhead Colts in the group stages. Windsor Colts were depleted with four of their players on a university field trip to Amsterdam! Windsor U17s produced an outstanding performance to reach the semi finals of the Oxon, Bucks and Berks Colts 10s Tournament, hosted at Home Park on Sunday. The U17s had only entered the tournament of 16 teams at the last minute to make up the numbers after a Colts team withdrew and at Colts level which is U19s, they were playing two years above themselves. Consequently, expectations were not high going into the tournament but the U17s confidence grew after they drew 7-7 with Reading in the first pool match. With the U17s playing as Windsor B, next up were Amersham and Chiltern who quickly found themselves 12-0 down after two tries from Jack Johnson. Amersham reduced the deficit to 12-10 in the second half but then came what was surely the most outstanding try of the day. From a ruck near the touchline Will Crane gained quick ball and lofted a cross field kick to the opposite touchline where James Gillies fielded the ball then stepped inside the final defender to give Windsor B a 17-10 win. This set up the final pool match against Maidenhead, the Tournament’s number one seeds and runners-up in the OBB Colts Division One. Things didn’t look good when Maidenhead took an early 5-0 lead but the tide began to turn after Jack Pattinson put in a massive hit, perfectly legally, on the Maidenhead number 10. The U17s were up for the challenge and soon afterwards Tim Bascombe charged through to score under the posts. Crane converted for a 7-5 lead. Windsor B were forced to defend for most of the second half but held out for the win to earn top spot in their pool. In the quarter final the U17s met Stow on the Wold and started disastrously as Stow scored straight from the kick-off. After that though it was one way traffic as a stunning display of quick hands and running rugby saw Windsor run in 5 tries, 3 from Jack Johnson, 1 from up and coming talent Ross O’Connor and 1 from David Tarbox. Windsor B then faced a mighty Bicester side in the semi final who had put paid to Windsor’s own Colts, playing as Windsor A, in their quarter final. Bicester were clear favourites but they were stunned in the opening stages when James Enright intercepted a Bicester pass and sprinted clear to score a converted try for a 7-0 lead. Despite conceding a try in reply, Windsor B led 7-5 at the interval and suddenly anything looked possible. However, Bicester started the stronger in the second half and took a 10-7 lead. Injuries started to take their toll on Windsor B and they were reduced to their last 10 remaining fit players after Rhys Davies suffered concussion and a broken nose in a determined tackle on the biggest of the Bicester forwards. In the closing moments Jack Robson found Alex Jones who drove the ball on, then offloaded to Jack Pattinson who passed to Jack Johnson on the overlap. It looked as though Johnson would score to win the semi final but he was bundled into touch just short of the line by a try saving Bicester tackle which won the match for them 10-7. The Cup was won by Chinnor A and the Plate by Reading with the trophies presented by Nils Mordt and Dominc Shabbo of London Irish. |

U14s hold up Cork Trophy | Under 14s win Irish Festival of Rugby The climax of a fantastically successful Tour to Ireland for the U14s was an heroic victory against the favourites for the Tournament, Bedford Rugby Club, in the Final of the Irish Festival of Rugby competition held in Cork on Saturday and Sunday 5th & 6th of April. The Tour itself included 24 boys and 16 parents and had got of to a rip roaring heraldic start with a Crusader theme and a tour slogan, which proved, not surprisingly for the U14s , quite prophetic, of "Craic'd in Cork". The first day saw our lads play in a Group of four teams and start, typically slowly against a side from Gloucester, Prospect Hill RFC. Windsor eventually winning this by 15-12 due to a debut try from lock forward Ashley Britton. The second game, and our hardest saw the team hit their straps against a tough northern team from Billingham and take the game three tries to nil with Adam Scaffadi and Seb Moseley making menacing breaks all day and Danny Pyatt scoring a typically brave and cheeky scrum half's try in the second half. Result 15-5 to Windsor. The final game against Middleton saw the whole squad come on and enjoy a comfortable victory over the host club side. Result 20- 5 to Windsor The Final day first match (semi final) was against old rivals London Scottish and, encouragingly, the boys put on a first half performance which was truly dominant running in three tries. The second half saw two more Windsor tries and, having made some substitutions to get everyone on the pitch, a hatrick of tries in response by the exiles. However, Windsor were clear winners 27-15 and into the Final. An "English" exhibition of tackling grit by the whole team, against the wind and slope and some precision kicking by Seb Moseley saw Bedford fail to take advantage of the elements and leave the score at 0-0 and the very tense coaching staff with real cause for optimism. The second half was naturally very intense but as in the first half played entirely at one end of the field and to demonstrate just how imbalanced the wind had made the game the Windsor full back Kris Boulter, who had an outstanding game, was able to kick the ball 80 yards out of defence to within five yards of the opposition try line. Five or six scrums on the Bedford five yard line eventually allowed Seb Moseley the space to use his power and pace and breach the Bedford defence for a try. This was followed shortly by a second similar attack and the same outcome sealing the game and the Cup for Windsor 10-0. Many team coaches came up to us afterwards and commented on how well the boys had played and how much it was evident they wanted to win. It is not just the winning, the tour was a wonderful experience in every other way but the the cherry on the icing of a great tour is a great Victory!

Touchline Code of Conduct
For some time the RFU have been concerned at increasing levels of misbehaviour by spectators and parents whilst watching rugby played at the under 18 level. As a result, and at the request of Clubs, they have produced two posters and a code of conduct card which they hope will assist Clubs when dealing with this issue. Click here for the poster that shows good practice (green) and unacceptable (red). Click here for a poster with suggested actions that Windsor Rugby should take for a range of possible misdemeanors. Whilst this is aimed at Youth Rugby, it might be advantageous for all supporters of the senior game to set an example in their behaviour.

Windsor U14s make Berkshire A team
Windsor RFC were proud to see five of their young stars of the future picked to represent Berkshire U14As this week in a tough fixture against Oxfordshire A played in a howling gale and freezing temperatures at Chinnor RFC. Windsor skipper Teo Kubiena, fellow prop Tom Noakes, scrum half Danny Pyatt, flanker Adam Scaffardi and outside centre Seb Moseley all had excellent games despite Berkshire going down 20-5 to a team that had played many games together. It was Berkshire U14s first game and watching Windsor coach Jamie Pyatt said: "Individually they were better than their opposite numbers but it will take them two or three matches to get to know each other's play and to gel as a team. "It was a great moment to see five of our boys take the field for their County and to be presented with their Berkshire ties afterwards. There are two more County games this season at U14s level and I hope to see them all progress very well. "We have four more boys in the full County squad and their chance to shine will come in the next match in April. Their parents were all extremely proud to see them selected and taking what could be their first steps towards a future in the game".

Windsor U16 into South West England Squad
Chris Laidler has been selected for the South West England squad and flies off to Munster before Xmas to play his first game. Congratulations Chris, who is one of four from Berkshire to get into the squad of 40 across the ten counties. After the county fixtures this season Chris Laidler was invited to attend a SW Divisional training session at Bryanston School in Dorset along with five of his county team mates. 60 boys from across the 10 counties attended and enjoyed a tough day of training and games. This then took 46 of them through to the trial games the following weekend at Wellington School in Somerset. Despite atrocious weather conditions the selectors arrived at the final 40 they wanted to form the two squads that will represent the South West Schools. Chris was selected along with three others from Berkshire Sean McDermatroe and Harry Stapleton from Readingensians and Guy Armitage from Wellington College. They now have quite a busy schedule in front of them, starting this weekend with a three day tour to Munster in Ireland to play their Acadamy. Over the next few months the SW have confirmed a Divisional Festival in Coventry where the four England divisions play each other. A England South v England North fixture and then the SW squad will take on the England 'A' squad.
